In my industry - VFX and Animation - we were used to the term 'Master' and 'Slave' for our render nodes. I never liked it and I'm glad they are changing things there.
However, people went on a full spree against the word Master in any setting. They wanted the word out of every little corner of a software. An example is something called 'Decimation Master' in the software ZBrush. It decimates your mesh really well... It is a master of decimation.
I think it's important to differentiate between the terms "Master" and "Master". On one side you have the master and slave term. On the other, you have the term master as "to master your craft". This is completely different and you shouldn't mix the two. Should we stop calling it Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D? Should it be Bachelor, Really Good, and Ph. D instead?
